I wanted to give you a quick update tour of our garden and chicken moat for summer 2024. We finally got the garden mostly on lockdown so the chickens couldn't get in. I have an occasional escapee but it's mostly good now. This has given some of my plants some time to get established. I still have a lot of zones that really need to be filled in but plants are expensive so patients may need to be...

This is probably my FAVORITE mulch alternative that I've tried so far- WOOL is amazing at providing a barrier for weeds, helps keep moisture in the soil, and I anticipate that it will break down more slowly than wood mulch. It's also light weight. Read more about wool as a mulch and weed barrier on my farm website, happyhoneysucklefarm.org: happyhoneysucklefarm.org/314/wool-mulch/

      Mixed feelings! I have a bunch of different Omlet (and non Omlet) setups now. Haha. I like the taller ones. If I plan to spend a lot of time with the animal. It's just easier for me to get in. For the animals I spend less time with, these are great. I like having fresh bedding whenever I move them and I think it cuts down on the cost of bedding as well. I prefer the ones that the wheels are on the outside because my chicks are sometimes dumb and like to stand near the wheels while I'm trying to move it.

    You also have to remember that if paneling, which is quite thin you can gets moisture behind it, you’re gonna end up with mold .. sheet rock doesn’t do that.. paneling is merely aesthetic.. On the ceiling of a shed, I want to do corrugated metal sheets, and if I don’t cap the ends, the moisture gets behind and my fiberglass batting with mold… I am putting thin half-inch sheet rock up and I’m not taping texturing. I’m merely gonna be putting up pallet boards for the aesthetic look and Wayne’s coating to offset.

  • @someoneyouknow96
    @someoneyouknow96 2 месяца назад

    I guess I’m confused. It’s waterproof but they still want you to caulk the edges. Plus you already have Schluter behind the stuff so I’m still not understanding why the caulk between the panels.

    • @doityourselfdanielle
      @doityourselfdanielle 2 месяца назад

      Because water goes through gaps? 1st- It's waterproof if you install it properly. 2nd- Just because it's waterproof doesn't mean water won't go through seams. In theory, water might get trapped behind the tiles if it went through. Would the tiles rot? I don't imagine they would. But you'd have a nice warm moist area for mold to grow. 3rd- Not caulking some projects is just sloppy. When you've spent hours installing something, don't skip the last step that only takes minutes. We have tile in our upstairs bathroom, installed by whomever. I have wondered how we'd know if mold was behind those tiles if the install hadn't been done properly. Pretty sure we'd need to wait until we had health issues and tested. 😬

    • @doityourselfdanielle
      @doityourselfdanielle 6 месяцев назад

      So my guinea pigs don't try to dig out. My rabbits do. You can buy the wire to put under there which might not be a bad idea. But guinea pig feet are bothered by wire. So you want to cover the wire with dirt afterwards. That all said, I ended up putting stall mats on the bottom of my cages because it's easier to clean than dirt. I'm able to put down sawdust and then scoop it out whenever it's dirty versus trying to scoop the sawdust off the dirt. So far I like this. For the rabbits, I wish I'd put the wire down first because they like to find any small little area to sneak out if they can. 😂 My rabbit May likes to go for a little wander occasionally.
